This website is entirely my own creation and has nothing to do with any former employers. Not only do I accept all responsibility but also I assert all rights over the site's content. The views expressed are entirely personal and not endorsed by the UK actuarial profession. Nothing on this website constitutes “advice”.
For reasons that I don’t understand as advanced, the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (“IFoA”) have asked UK actuaries (Fellows and Associates) to vote on whether or not to be relabelled as Chartered Actuaries. As seen so often before, the consultation has been incredibly unbalanced with little evidence presented. Although it looks like an emotional vanity project, it seems that there are reasons why IFoA really want this to pass which they have not disclosed to members. However, I present reasons why I believe members should not vote as requested BUT PLEASE DO VOTE.
When I suggested to IFoA that a debate would be a good idea, I was told that a confrontational approach would not be helpful. Frankly, I thought this was bizarre because debates are commonly held in order to identify common views and reasons for differences, which may then be resolved, partially. Apparently, IFoA aren’t aware of that and don’t want to play. Accordingly, I arranged a public debate at midday on Monday 05 December 2022 on Zoom, the proceedings being summarised here..
The following pages, some of which are deliberately brief, describe what I see as IFoA’s official reasons, IFoA’s inferred actual reasons, actuaries’ reputation, word not protected, other professions, potential impact and IFoA’s reputation. Anything else that is suggested will be gratefully received and may be incorporated.
